John,
         I've been on the 717 in a few times, including one ride in the
jumpseat.  I haven't ever seen them wait at the gate to start, unless it is
recent (I haven't been on it in 8 months or so.)  I know that it takes about
4-5 minutes for the engine to be fully up and stabilized at idle.
