FAA Orders American to Recheck Bags

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Federal Aviation Administration ordered American
Airlines to reinspect baggage on as many as 30 flights Thursday night
after questioning the carrier's handling of checked bags.

Federal workers inspecting security at Lambert Airport found that American
Airlines agents ``were not doing required inspections on some of their
checked bags,'' said Tony Molinaro, an FAA spokesman in Chicago.

The FAA requested the airline recheck ``some bags'' on roughly 30 outbound
flights at the airport, he said. He would not specify the security
concern.

The airline complies fully with all FAA orders concerning security,
including those implemented since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks,
spokeswoman
Julia Bishop-Cross told KSDK-TV.

She said 58 of its flights were delayed Thursday night at Lambert.

Paul Mason, the airport's police chief, described the matter as ``an
ongoing regulatory issue between the FAA and American Airlines,'' and said
that his force was assisting in rechecking some baggage.
