I was actually not aware that this variable was there but it seems it gets replaced by the dirname of the .in file where it gets substituded, whihc I find very odd actually. So if the software is in, say, /home/me/src/software and the template file is in subdirectory foo of the tree, then when I run configure, what I see in the file produced from the template is /home/me/src/software/foo which is not quite what I expect.
