In fact, this: AC_SUBST([DX_FLAG_[]DX_CURRENT_FEATURE], 0) should be written like this: AC_SUBST([DX_FLAG_]DX_CURRENT_FEATURE, 0) Versions of aclocal before 1.8 didn't use the m4 tracing facility, so the error does not show during its run, but autoconf still complains.
