If you use a released autoconf, you are independent of the version of automake already installed (bootstrapping a CVS version of autoconf is a different matter, but the OP does not appear to need to do that, since he is not developing autoconf patches). It is the other way around - automake tends to have rather strict requirements on which version of autoconf is already installed. Therefore, you should ask on the automake list if you want a table of automake versions corresponding to autoconf versions. I encountered no problems installing autoconf 2.61 followed by automake 1.10 into the same --prefix, then using that new prefix for my programs. - -- Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
