I have version 2.57 installed on my system and I would like to upgrade
to 2.61.. What do I need to do this?

Hmm.  You could download
<ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.61.tar.bz2>

He could try. But most of the releases of autoconf since 2.52 have had
interdependencies with specific versions of automake. Perhaps he doesn't
need that much entertainment...
Simply install autoconf and automake to a prefix != /usr or /usr/local
and the issue is gone.

ok - then it sounds as if the defect still exists.

Perhaps the maintainer should document this in the install instructions
(which appear to be just the boilerplate copied from some template).

Better yet, _write_ some useful documentation telling what versions
of automake the release used (grep doesn't count).
