How did you guess? I am trying to build gtk+ and find that dependencies and rpaths are missing. PATH_XTRA was one. A LDADDS in one of the gtk+ Makefile.ams is the other problem - LDADDS although set correctly isn't used anywhere - the author probably thought it was the equivalent to AM_LDFLAGS, but that is for another list...
