Well, the documentation is not exact, but the difference is small. But if you arrange that $U is empty, all works. Annyway... I looked at the sources. AC_LIBOBJ really does what the documentation says, but then _AC_LIBOBJS_NORMALIZE is called from AC_OUTPUT and it reformats the contents of the variable.
