If you think it is something needed all the tools are open to you to start.

1. generating an installed pkg list into an rss feed. - trivial.
2. having a history of everything installed/updated/removed - available now with the yum history db(thanks james!)

The piece you need to work on is taking the rss feed and using that to make the boxes match _mostly_.

What about 2 scripts.

One to collect config files from all installed files then process them to strip system veriables, passwords, IP's, etc. And then to package them into rpm. Extract point would be separate folder that second script could use (with internal database with original location of config files) to offer manual control and placement within original locations on new system.

First script would find system variables, track down those values within scripts and replace them with internal variables that second script would replace with variables from new system.

First script should also check if folder/paths it configs are links (both hard and soft) and offer to recreate them. This should follow several levels of links in case there are links to links.

Sounds like something You and Les should work on together.
