Re: Plugin for yum to download packages in parts

Hello,

As others have mentioned, this is feasible, but what is the actual
problem with the current method?  With a local mirror, my hosts can
download updates at 10MB/sec and this is only limited by the local
mirror having a 100BaseT interface instead of Gigabit.

With local mirrors the process is fine, This way package Download speeds in MB/sec are seen.

If you approach the problem with a more generic solution, you might find
it helps other downloads as well.  For example, why not deploy a Squid
proxy between all your machines and your ISP?  That way, one machine
downloads the updates and the others get the updates from the local proxy.

This would reduce your Internet bandwidth requirements and decrease your
update times.  That's just one solution for a small set of download
problems; maybe you're problem wouldn't be fixed with a proxy, but could
be fixed with another generic solution that wouldn't require yum code
changes.

Its difficult each time to sync the machine each time, for local networks, and its any time better that yum has capability to download multiple packages at same time.

Much about it has already been discussed and can be found in yum archives.
