As others have mentioned, this is feasible, but what is the actual problem with the current method? With a local mirror, my hosts can download updates at 10MB/sec and this is only limited by the local mirror having a 100BaseT interface instead of Gigabit. If you approach the problem with a more generic solution, you might find it helps other downloads as well. For example, why not deploy a Squid proxy between all your machines and your ISP? That way, one machine downloads the updates and the others get the updates from the local proxy. This would reduce your Internet bandwidth requirements and decrease your update times. That's just one solution for a small set of download problems; maybe you're problem wouldn't be fixed with a proxy, but could be fixed with another generic solution that wouldn't require yum code changes.
