On the bad laptop the rpm -V command showed prelinking changes with rpm libs. I ran ldd on one of the libs and discovered some old gcc and pthreads libraries in /usr/local/lib. I removed the old /usr/local/lib gcc and pthreads libraries and now everything works fine. Thank you, David.
