Richard, Maybe you can uninstall yum, download the yum src rpm from http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/download/2.4/yum-2.4.0-1.src.rpm and then run rpmbuild --rebuild yum*.src.rpm in the directory where you downloaded that file and then run rpm -iv on the resultant rpm file and see if that works.
