I found my problem (my bad): I had a local libxml2 which was current with RH 9 but outdated after the FC 1 upgrade. It was being used by python and it had a missing symbol. I removed the outdated library and everything works fine now. That brings up some questions: -Is there any way yum could have found that situation? -Should rpm have found it? -Should I not mix manual and rpm updates (not mix is the probable answer)?
