I've used yum to upgrade from RH7.2, 7.3, 8.0, 9.0 to RHE3 a few times just fine. Sometimes you have to uninstall a few things to get the deps to resolve. The only problem I had was upgrading from RH8.0. I kept getting rpmdb errors with rpm transactions with more than ~40 packages.
