  ironically, this was the very article that convinced me that there
are no decent HOWTOs out there.

  the biggest problem that article has is that its very first 
example of a yum command is an *update*.  no self-respecting
(or even remotely sane) admin is going to, as his/her first 
exposure to a new command, let it do a full system update.

  the *first* thing such a tutorial should so is explain the
yum.conf file -- how to locate yum repositories, and add them
to the file.

  then, perhaps, how to verify that yum is working properly by
listing system status *without* changing anything.  admins want
*feedback* before they let something like yum loose on their
system.

  anyway, that article is still pretty deficient as a tutorial,
IMHO.  still interested in other pointers.
