Installing the 32bit version of glibc will _overwrite_ the 64bit versions of important files like /sbin/ldconfig! Why RedHat is distributing conflicting packages is beyond me. If you select "32bit compatiblity packages" (that's not the correct name, but it's close) in the RH installer, it will work. Presumably it ensures that the 32bit packages are installed first.
