Another possibility is to have a test for the unicode support early in
the comps.xml stuff that checks for unicode/2.2 and complains if it's
not there.  That way, if you want it, install 2.2.  If you don't,
then don't worry about it.  This might be friendlier than then a full
branch.

It all depends on what other differences between 1.5 and 2.2 cause you
trouble.  In my experience, almost everything that works under 1.5.2
works fine under 2.2, and those things that don't are easily fixed so
they do.

Not sure what the shebang line should be in /usr/bin/yum though.  You
might just have to say "run it as 'python2 yum'".
