Oh, I'm a little surprised at that. When I switched my KVM sandbox hacks from a quick proof of concept, over to using libvirt, I saw about a 300-500ms overhead from libvirt in the startup process. My presumption is that this overhead is primarily from libvirt invoking qemu -help several times to figure out supported options.
