Ignore the macOS 14 failure, it's caused by a temporary issue on the
Cirrus CI side.

Changes since [v1]:

 * a few patches have either been pushed (1-4) or are no longer
   needed (10), so they have been dropped;

 * the last patch has been tweaked a bit and the changes contained
   in it are now documented with a code comment.
