kickstarting old gear, AIC-7896

I am attempting to kickstart some old generic gear, which has an Intel
L440GX+ MB, w/ an AIC-7896 SCSI HBA onboard.

At one time, I am told, they were kickstarted successfully using 6.2... I am
attempting to kickstart using 7.2, however, I get a lot of scsi error
messages like this when the aic7xxx module gets insmod'd:

SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting

and so...

and the kickstart never gets going...

I have tried using some older driver disks with no luck... anyone seen
anything similar?
