Yes, I did list scsi_mod as a dependency. I copied the line from the
modules.dep for the ft.o driver that lists scsi_mod as the only dependency
to the modules.dep file that goes on my floppy.

Did you list scsi_mod as a dependency of ft mod in the modules.dep file?
