OK, I figured out the problem.

It turns out that if the NFS server is unreachable (due to an incorrect name,
for instance), then the installation program asks lots of extra questions,
even though the answers are already known.

In my case, I did not fully qualify the NFS server's name, so it couldn't
be resolved.  Understandably, it asked for clarification on that point.
Unfortunately, it also asked lots of other irrelevant questions, such as
language, keyboard, and so on.
