The background (of this background image) stays as it is (strech-to-fit fluid) - whereas, the spaceship, beam etc. can be hovering PNGs (either elastic or fixed sized); at the very least, even http://dromaeo.com's header like implementation would be good too.
Well, it'll take a little more work though - but, I'd say it's a fair tradeoff.
