Try to keep entirely separate stylesheets and avoid inline styles. Make sure you use a proper DTD, and that the pages can pass validation checks. Also avoid tags and attributes that are deprecated or unavailable in XHTML standards. Basically, we want HTML that is ready to become XHTML or can easily be ported to another markup. If you can meet Section 508 and WAI accessibility guidelines, that would be great. If you choose an AJAX solution, make sure it scales backwards to work on older browsers, too. Using AJAX and DHTML-type solutions would produce a nicer interface, but we want the site to be as accessible as possible. PNG, SVG Try to stick to PNG graphics. Do not use GIF images, and prefer PNG over JPEG. Obviously, we will want to accept all kinds of contributions, including vector graphics creations, so make sure you allow for SVG submissions, and possibly other formats, too. Completely proprietary formats, such as some of the formats used by Adobe solutions or Paint Shop Pro, should not be supported. Providing directions for exporting to more open formats should be easy. RSS Although not a requirement, RSS feeds of updates would be nice to have. Layout You are free to come up with whatever sort of layout you desire. As long as it is relatively easy to use and works well, you can do what feels right to you.
