I have looked at the tools and see that if you set a cron job for
"scrub" that will minimize issues. Everything I read, "scrub" should
be run at least monthly if not weekly or more often. Also issues with
how free disk space is reported, even yesterday I current reports on
freespace.
Do you know what "scrub" is? It's the same thing that mdraid does by
default once in a while. It scans the drive to make sure the hard drive
is still good. It's more useful with btrfs and raid than ext4 because
there are checksums, so you can tell if the hard drive has mangled the
data. You can't do that with ext4 because there's no way to validate
the read data. You don't have to do it, it's just a safety check for
you to check the hard drive.
The free space issue is people not understanding how btrfs works. Given
subvolumes and COW, space usage is hard to define.
Even from reports of this year, it is stated that if you use BTFS, you
need to be proactive on management, hence the comment about scrub. A
statement that from what I have read, should be a script in crontab on
install of btfs. Also, defrag on a regular basis with filefrag.
I wonder where you are seeing these suggestions because they really are
strange.
You may be right. Like I said, I was burned with btrfs a few years ago,
enough to put doubt in my head. "Volumes" in LVM's have caused me
issues in the past, as well. I will have to learn more about BTRFS
volumes before I use them. A learning curve.
Just about all the sites have pointed to running scrub under a cron
script on a regular basis to help minimize issues and ensure integrity
of the drive. I don't know what it does, just what I have read.
I used to have raid arrays for some stuff but found that repairing a
massive raid array was so time consuming it wasn't worth my time. Good
backups are much better and quicker for my usage.
Each person has their own usage and needs. As I said, I will give BTRFS
a closer look in the near future. Working with volumes is a new domain
for me to learn. I have worked with ext file system for over a decade.
I know it isn't perfect and the repair aspect of btrfs is something that
sounds nice for what I want. It will be on a single external drive and
see how that works. Minimal integration into the system. Might even
start with a USB stick for testing.
Many things to learn before trying btrfs again.
