Or more, looking for some baselines to extrapolate from? The last item. Using components with which I'm familiar, I'd like to get an understanding of the efficiency gains. The metric that is often cited is PUE (power usage effectiveness). For a unit of computation/processing, X amount of power is used. Or stated differently, for a unit of time X computations can be done using 1 watt. So, how can I use the metrics that I cited for a Pentium II from 1998 and an i7 from 2019 to show the amount of efficiency that has been achieved? Same with network usage (data throughput per energy used) and storage. In the latter case, that's why I cited the 2006 Hitachi HDD vs the recent vintage Samsung SSD. > Not an area I've studied in-depth but there are a bunch of people in the cloud native (and large on-prem DC) world working on software carbon impact. > > https://www.v2.digital/insights/how-green-is-your-software-unravelling-the-software-carbon-intensity > https://powerapi.org/getting_started/ > https://github.blog/open-source/social-impact/the-10-best-tools-to-green-your-software/ > https://www.thoughtworks.com/en-us/insights/blog/ethical-tech/calculating-software-carbon-intensity > https://learn.greensoftware.foundation/measurement/ > > You might want to follow people like Anne Currie or Pini Resnik on social media if your angle is larger scale environmental impact (as opposed to what fuses do I need in my consume unit :D)scale Thank you for the links; but GHG issues are tangential to my question.
