I think you mean "|". But even better would be "|& tee output.txt" as that also saves the stderr output which is probably more useful.

Thank-you, Samuel. It's a pipe, not a re-direct. I did not know about the '&'. Does the '&' have to immediately follow the pipe, or can there be a space between them?
