2. correct or wrong:
Not all messages displayed on the monitor during the boot process,
before log-in becomes available, are stored in /var/log/boot.log*
files.
I think that some may be omitted. Mine seems to just start logging
when booting gets to the OK/FAIL sections of starting services.
Also look at dmesg (it's a command, and logfiles in /var/log/dmesg).
There is no "/var/log/dmesg" directory or file.
"find -name logfiles -print" does not find a file "logfiles" in the /var tree.
3. If there are a group of lines in a log file that I want to put in
a post to this list, and that log file uses formatting codes, what
are the best ways to put that group of lines into an e-mail message
to this list without the formatting codes, WITHOUT manually retyping
those lines in the e-mail, and WITHOUT having to manually delete
every formatting code character?
People mayn't care if you post them with the colour codes in them.
They can even save the logs as temporary files, and view them with the
colours as colours.
I try to help people help me, and it seems that log entries without color codes is a good step in that direction.
In a past thread some time ago, someone did complain about color codes in log entries.
Alternatively, you can copy and paste them through a reader app, or
pass them through ansi2txt or ansifilter programs, to filter things
down to plain text.
I'll have to play with those some, along with "cat" as Samuel suggested.
