The "-b N" option lets you view the journal for different boots. The journal will display everything that is logged for each boot session, including shutdown processing, so can be very helpful when you get different behaviours on two boots. Particularly with multi-boot systems there can sometimes be differences depending on the order in which the OS's were booted.
