I don't know much about the engineering of these various flash drives and usb drives, but I was surprised on occasion to see that some had a password protection. Is it possible that the computer is seeing something at machine level like a mistakenly set or unset flag that makes the processor think that the stick is where to find the BIOS?
It only does this on the laptop.
