When python made the move I was also curious about how well it would work out.
I've had email for since the beginning of time (well epoch+10 years atleast) and use it all the time.
There was as lot of discussion on the mailing lists before the move about it
being a poor replacement for email, as here.

I hear that the email issues are being worked on, but I did not bother with getting
it to email me stuff. I find the New and Unread tracking the discourse does is good
enough that I can keep up to date and follow threads I'm contributing to.
