You should say whether you're using USB headphones or analogue ones (using the 3.5 mm jacks). Analogue ones work by the switches shorting together certain pins in the jacks (or through low value resistors, rather than dead shorts). That will require the audio hardware to be compatible with that method, at the very least. USB ones could simply act as a custom keyboard (replicating some of the media keys you see on some keyboards).
