That kind of thing's a pet hate of mine.  On usenet (newsgroups), the
clients had an IGNORE flag.  You marked stuff as ignored (and hidden,
if you wanted that), if you were ignoring it.  The READ flag could be
left to only mark things that *you've* actually read.  I could always
tell what I'd read, or not, regardless of any other status.  Few mail
clients have cottoned onto the value of that.
