There are not too many emails here, maybe a few tens of thousand

Not all in the inbox, or one folder, I hope?
No, Inbox is very light, most messages automatically go to own folders, and stragglers moved manually.
My main mail client is on another machine, still running tb 91, and
not showing this problem.
Are the circumstances similar? IMAP, POP3, local mail. Similar folder
usage.
POP3, but the problem shows before I can do anything, let alone fetch mail (not done automatically when tb launches).
NB: I make minimal use of Thunderbird, so I can only offer general-
purpose advice. I don't like it, and it doesn't like me. I use
Evolution mainly, and Thunderbird occasionally on an old Mac, and even
more rarely try it on Linux to help test something.
I keep my inbox fairly empty, like a pending in tray. I've noticed
many mail clients don't like a full inbox, and since it's usually the
first thing they load it's worth keeping its content down.
On mailing lists folders I do have one with 41,806 messages in it.
Ones like that can take some time to process when the cache is out of
date, but a mere fraction as long as you mentioned.
tb v91 had no such issues. The largest folder (where all patches go from all linux lists)
has about 180k messages and it never was a problem.
