Possibly not.
Changing pfn seems to have no effect.
Setting gfn does have an effect.
No spelling of DejaVu Sans Mono seems to have any effect,
whether with 0, 2 or 3 escaped spaces.
:set gfn=Helvectica does have an effect.
:set pfn=Helvectica does have an effect.

BTW where is Helvetica stored?

on both Fedora 35 and 36:

% fc-match Helvetica:en
NimbusSans-Regular.otf: "Nimbus Sans" "Regular"

It seems not to be under /usr/share/fonts .
find /usr -name '*vetica*'
doesn't.

You can't rely on legacy font names as there have been multiple "clones",
often supporting additional languages (hence the need to specify a language).
The fontconfig system provides aliases for the legacy Adobe names.
