In my opinion, when hibernating or suspending the system really NEEDS
to flush/sync drive cases before going down. *It* ought to be doing
that itself, as part of the process. Not you having to manually do it,
first.

When a system is shut down that way, it's highly likely that any
plugged in drives may get unplugged - people expect to be able to do
that. And USB devices may lose power when their host is in standby
modes, and may not come back to life in a ready-to-use state. So a
resuming system needs to be able to reset external drive interfaces,
and cope with devices self-resetting, before doing anything else with
them.

I don't know if that's still so, but I do know that in many cases it's
not suitable to use such basic file systems. You may need the metadata
that goes along with files regarding permissions and ownership.
