I ended up buying what was available at the local Walmart: a Gateway laptop with 8GB that has the same footprint as my ole laptop. This means that I can use the same carrying bag for it, specifically a backpack that doesn't look like it has a laptop in it.
I'm hoping to find a way to get access to the old one's hdd, as there's a lot of stuff I'd like to retrieve, but that's for another time...
There are cheap USB adapters for many types of drives. You may need one that has a power dongle if the old drive has high
power requirements.
