I'm starting to think that my copy of gnome might be broken.
I have two files wtf.desktop and vicious.desktop
that are identical except for the Name field.
How did you create the two files? Did you start off with one, edit it to
change the Name field and save it with a different name? I ask because there
might be spaces or other invisible characters in one and not the other. Try
using diff to make sure.
I did:
[root@localhost applications]# diff wtf.desktop vicious.desktop
2c2
< Name=Vicious7
---
Name=Tomato
[root@localhost applications]# ls -l wtf.desktop vicious.desktop
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 201 Jan 7 12:16 vicious.desktop
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 203 Jan 7 12:16 wtf.desktop
[root@localhost applications]#
vicious.desktop has Name=Tomato. Tomato shows up.
If I swap the file names so that the file with Name=Vicious7
has file name vicious.desktop , Vicious7 shows up.
The original wtf.desktop was a handmade thing I thought should work.
The original vicious.desktop was a copy of vlc.desktop .
