OK, I've "fixed" the problem.
I'm using KDE and I went to System Settings-->Hardware-->Audio-->Configure
and for the profile for the Bluetooth speaker output I picked
High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink, codec ACC)
and now everything is great!
