It seems like you're asking for help solving the wrong problem (or, at least, a harder problem than necessary). And even when folks suggest better ways to solve that problem --using a proper API or calling git directly-- you're still doing it the more fragile way in the end. I'd be inclined to suggest taking a step back and try to describe the actual end goal and determine if the problem you're trying to solve is even the right one to solve. :) Whether that ends up being something relevant to this list or not, I don't know. -- Todd
