I think that Google has become nearly useless. If my search term

A colleague suffered with retinal degeneration that made it impossible to
quickly filter out irrelevant/unwanted hits. Google needs to provide a
better way to distinguish ads from substance.
I understand that they are trying to accumulate viewings for their
advertisers but it has become a waste of my time. Can anyone suggest an
alternative?
If you use Google enough, and don't click on ads, it gets better. I rarely search
for anything non-technical, and get very different results from the same search
done by others. Every one and while a search does trigger dozens of ad hits
before it comes up with something useful to me.
