What would it take in 2021 or beyond to bulid a distro free of X, just for demo purposes ?
It depends on what you mean by "free of X". If you're running a Wayland desktop like Gnome, the only X involved is the Xwayland process that provides an X "interpreter" for programs that don't have native Wayland support yet. If you disabled that, then only Wayland applications would work.
I know most applications would not work.
True, but most of the major ones have native Wayland support now. I think most Gtk programs should work as long as they don't use anything X-specific. And possibly other graphics toolkits as well.
But what would work ? Would AMD graphics work ? Would Mutter work ? Would you be able to log into Gnome ?
These are kind of strange questions. Gnome by default uses Wayland now, so of course you could login. And mutter is part of gnome-shell and clearly AMD graphics are working.
Obviously Xfce and LXDE and LXQt would not work, and I guess Mate, nor Cinnamon, nor Budgie, would work.
For now, no. It depends on if they plan to port to Wayland or not. _______________________________________________ users mailing list -- users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe send an email to users-leave@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
