Mine is different, but not so much that I can't work with your
instructions.
To the right of the play control buttons, there are two rows. On the
second row, there are microphone and speaker icons. To the left of
the microphone is where you can pick which input to use. Below the
play control icons is a microphone and to the right of that is a meter
which says "Click to Start Monitoring". If you click that, you should
see the level of the microphone input. If you don't see any activity
try other input options.
Mine is not only set to ALSA, it can't be changed. And, I can only set
it to either Mono or Stereo, and neither works. And yet, if I go into
the Settings in Zoom and check Audio, I can see that it's picking up
sound from my internal microphone, just fine.
I see that mine also doesn't change from ALSA, but if I click on it, I
get a list of options: default, sysdefault, pulse, and "HDA Intel...".
