And for those of us who don't use Gnome?  There are two folders of that name in different places: /etc/X11 and /usr/share/X11 so which one do I look in?

I wasn't aware of that /usr/share one, but local modifications are supposed to go in /etc. /usr/share/ is for distributed default configs.
