About this last point. When I get X stuck, if I can switch to a text tty
then I kill the X server
sudo killall Xorg
and I get a fresh login screen back. This is less drastic than a reboot.

Have either of you tried using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill server instead
of switching to a different console?
