As far as I am concerned things have gotten a lot worse. HDMI sound
used to need resetting because it appeared the buffer got corrupted from
time to time. Now it takes 5 minutes to get sound working at all and
this has to be repeated every time you log out or the computer goes to
sleep.
Is there a bug filed for your issue? I've never had a problem with HDMI
sound, at least for many years.
