Yes can!

So I'm going to temporary move the printer to the main switch, change the ethernet cable and see if that works... then let you know.

    ok, it was actually a cable issue. Replaced and then I can ping and
    add the printer when on the same subnet. 
    
    So now I'm back to my routing issue :-D
