Paolo, I have had this problem, with one old Thinkpad, but only after wakeup from hibernate. Another student has reported the same problem on a Dell laptop. What works for me is to click on the right mouse button (I use openbox WM) and then the pointer works. I have not this issue with two other laptops and one desktop workstation (all Dells). HTH, but it would be nice to get this resolved more holistically.
