Is it possible to restart display manager without killing all the apps open?
Nouveau has a tendency to crash more often that I like and each time it
does it, i restart display manager. Each time a restart it, all the apps are killed.

You should try to identify the problem with nouveau in case a simple fix (e.g.,
using modeset options as in this nouveau bug) is available.

Using a VNC server as suggested in another response allows you to have X11 apps
running across logouts and can reduce the pain while you troubleshoot nouveau.
If your system also has integrated graphics and a simple fix may be to turn off the
Nvidia graphics.

1. Is there a way to restart Nouveau without having to restart display manager?
2. Is there a way to restart display manager while keeping the apps alive? I
guess not because the apps depend on display manager but I wonder if such
a thing is feasible.
